  • Rollin Bowlin Mater - shiny or not shiny that's the question

I have seen a shiny RBM from a belgium collector, but he had no idea from which set it is from.
I know 3 sets where you can find a RBM (2006 factory sealed set, super 6 set and the classic RB play set),
but all of them have just the matt paintjob version of RBM.

My question : is there an official release of a shiny RBM ? was this shiny version available ?
Maybe it is just a conversion of a regular Brand New Mater, who knows ?

I have only this single picture, maybe that helps

Looks like a repaint or even a custom to me.

if this was my shiny RBM i could tell you, but unfortunately it is not. He sold it months ago, so all i have is this picture.

My guess is custom... in addition to the difference in the paint, the eyes are in a different position... I'll check mine later.

Back in 2006 there were no date codes on the bottom of the Car, only the cardback. All it would say is "Made in Thailand."

If it did have a date code, than it is a custom. I too think it is a custom because the eyes are segmented with the rest of Mater.

It would also help if we could see the sides as well.

i am sorry, but this is all i have to offer. If there are no more than these three sets i have mentioned before, we can close this case with the result, that the shiny RBM is a custom made one. So thanks to everybody for your help in this matter, i feel relieved that i am not missing another variant that i need.

I took comparison photos of a Brand New Mater and Rollin Bowlin Mater this evening...

My sealed Rollin Bowlin Mater looks just like the loose one shown above.

I suppose that the shiny Rollin Bowlin Mater could have been a prototype...

prototype sounds reasonable to me, thank you Chris. I am happy as long it is not an official release by Mattel, so i don't have to continue my hunt for this shiny RBM.

You know, something else came to mind this weekend as I looked at this. I sold a broken Rollin' Bowlin' Mater on eBay a couple years ago, and the Buyer emailed me photos of his restoration of it. Maybe it's his in that photo?
